Fredonia Chamber of Commerce

FredoniaNestled among the vineyards of Western New York's Northern Chautauqua County, Fredonia is a community deeply rooted and growing. This village of classic elegance and contemporary delight boasts a history rich in firsts, a progressive present in which its classic past is carefully preserved, quaint shops, quiet streets, friendly people, and a care for the casual visitor that makes the village a perfect day-trip or vacation destination.

The current village of Fredonia has origins stretching back to more than two hundred years ago when the Western New York area was surveyed by the Holland Land Company in 1798.  Originally called Canadaway, the area was first named for one of its prominent geographical features, the Canadaway Creek.  In 1830 Fredonia had been officially declared a village by the state legislature.

“The best of both worlds!" is how many describe Fredonia, New York, a picturesque village in rural Chautauqua County. Fredonia boasts a thriving downtown commercial area housed in historic architecture adjacent to distinctive civic buildings. The beautiful Barker Commons completes the historic ambience. Shop, eat, relax, spend the night and enjoy cultural activities in a village rich in history.

The centerpiece of downtown is Fredonia's twin Barker Commons. Laid out in 1825, are two splendidly restored Victorian Cast iron foundations. Floral displays and graceful shade trees make this a focal point for the downtown. The 1891 Fredonia Village Hall, and its recently restored award-winning Opera House, are among the most venerable civic buildings that surround the commons.

Fredonia is also home to the SUNY Fredonia, a comprehensive, selective, public, residential, liberal arts university.  SUNY Fredonia earned the 12th spot among Top Public Universities in the North in the 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges," published by U.S. News & World Report. The university has continually ranked as a "best university" in U.S. News & World Report since 1989.
